The diversity of Wayne McGregor’s astonishing talent is demonstrated through Chroma, Infra and Limen, each created for The Royal Ballet, for whom he is resident choreographer.
Intimate yet universal, light yet dark, frenetic yet lyrical, McGregor pursues his passion for exploring the inner workings of the human body and mind, his many-layered and beautiful dances providing visual, sensual and kinaesthetic stimulus for the viewer.
This is what Hank McFadyden says on the HDVDARTS site about this Triple Bill:
“McGregor has carefully picked 3 very different and intensely interesting modern compositions. His dance vocabulary is consistently engaging and awesomely beautiful.. I've watched this 7 times recently, and I wish I could make time to see it again right now!”
What the Jury liked:
The choreography and superb technique, the simplicity of the costumes and the lighting were what I found most impressive.
Infra particularly outstanding, although I wasn’t quite so keen on the other two.
I liked the peaceful movements and the beautiful bodies especially the contrast with the blonde girl on the black man.
The choreography, music and lighting were superb, as were the dancers.
These were three varied pieces each of an appropriate length. It was interesting to have the introduction and explanation of each piece by the choreographer. The music was excellent and the way the dance and music came together with the staging was very well done. The dancers were excellent.
Fantastic dancing throughout, loved how each movement was taken to the extreme. Some movements were rather repetitive from one ballet to the next. I adored the music and the way the dancers responded to it. I admired Chroma and the beauty of the black dancer with the blonde girl.
I loved everything. My favourite was Limen. Absolutely wonderful dancers and excellent music, plus a special word for the dramatic and highly effective lighting.
What the Jury liked less:
33% of the jury had no negative comments to make. Some of the Jury members expressed a preference for a particular ballet out of the three.
One person found the “people walking backwards and forwards in the background” (second ballet) very distracting. One person commented on it being all a little “too abstract”.
