DIRECTOR Graeme Murphy's production of Turandot dazzles, creating a bustling, brilliantly choreographed hive of activity that never detracts from the rather static plot.

Murphy's spectacular conception is so imaginative and well-conceived that it seems unlikely to ever look dated. In this Opera Australia production from the Melbourne Arts Centre, American soprano Susan Foster is an imposing Turandot, displaying stunning tonal purity and clarity of articulation, while the sheer power and strength of tenor Rosario La Spina's singing makes for an ardent, heroic portrayal of Calaf. As Liu, soprano Hyeseoung Kwon is exquisitely beautiful and deeply moving. The chorus impresses in both its bloodcurdling fortissimo outbursts and hushed sotto voce musings. Andrea Licato and the orchestra's stylish accompaniment realise the score's intriguing mix of sumptuous lyricism and astringent dissonance.

Jury comments:

“The choreography, chorus movements and set design were superb. As always, the music was stirring and delightful. Plus, everyone’s movements were very authentically Chinese. The tenor sang beautifully, despite being a bit wooden—unlike Timus his father, who moved me to tears with his farewell… All in all I found this performance quite thrilling.”

“This was my first taste of Turandot and I very much enjoyed it, although I found the plot rather simple and predictable. The characters were good, the music powerful and the voices wonderful.”

One of the best Blu-Ray opera productions I have ever seen. Just play it again ! »

Great staging in terms of the number of singers and dancers, the costumes, the interplay of flags and the choreography… I almost felt I was there, in China ! The voices were beautiful, and I particularly enjoyed those of Turandot and Liu… “

“Fabulous, impressive, Larger than life… and very moving.”

Excellent production, and while the casting of the two main characters may not be ideal, their voices are more than a match for these challenging parts. Together with the spectacular staging and expert choreography, this has to be the best production of Turandot currently available on Blu-Ray.

Bravo ! »
