“Tosca” from the Royal Opera House

Puccini's ever popular Tosca from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, with a star-studded cast - Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu as Floria Tosca, Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel as Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia, and tenor Jonas Kaufmann as the liberal revolutionary Cavaradossi. The production is by Jonathan Kent with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House under the baton of Music Director Antonio Pappano.

NB: There were only 2 live performances with this cast at Covent Garden.

L’OperaDou says:

Several of our Jury members had already seen this performance in the first “Live from Covent Garden” screening at Aigues Mortes last year.

This powerful performance won unanimous praise in every category, with most comments using the same superlatives…. Many even rated it “The definitive Tosca”.

Sample Jury comments:

Scarpia (Bryn Terfel) dominated this performance as far as I was concerned — even eclipsing Jonas Kaufmann. The interaction between Tosca and Scarpia was superlative. The orchestra and conducing from Antonio Pappano were superb.

This must be the greatest performance of the greatest opera ever !

Interprétation admirable — difficile à faire mieux ! Tous les acteurs sont au sommet de leur talent en termes de voix et de jeu. Tosca est sublime — tandis que Scarpia est diabolique et abject à souhait.

Absolutely stunning! Superb performances by the two male principals. Excellent acting — very moving. The ultimate Tosca!

Extraordinaire ! Beaucoup d’émotion. Magnifique mise en scène et jeux d’acteur, mais peut être trop de gros plans… même si cela nous permet de voir des choses que nous ne verrons pas dans la salle…

This is a performance which has everything. A stellar cast, imposing staging, superb conducting… I would particularly like to single out the superlative lighting which made the action and the music all the more dramatic. Left me breathless!

C’est le meilleur spectacle que j’ai vu. L’interprétation est remarquable, avec des interprètes tout à fait crédibles, riche en émotion, beauté vocale et esthétique.
