Jury comments:

Breathtakingly imaginative scenery and costumes. Brilliant photography. Wonderful music, although not always memorable. Singers superb with some reservations about Robert. Good acting, especially the dancers!

The struggle between Kindness and the Devil is always relevant. The  nuns' ballet magnificent and I particularly liked the staging with its references to religion. I found Isabel very "spiritual" and Beltram as well. This is an opera I would like to see again. Thank you for making it possible.

The staging of this production was superb and the interpretation (singing and conducting) outstanding! However, I must say I found it very long and the plot was rather confusing. This being said it was certainly well worth seeing and is something I will be recommending to my friends.

Vraiment superbe ! Tout était parfait, la musique, la mise en scène, la chorégraphie et les chanteurs. Plusieurs tableaux, y compris celui où l'on voit la transformation des nonnes en bachanale, étaient étonnant à couper le souffle !

This is definitely an opera worth seeing! The staging brought back to life an opera which has become rather dated, despite its popularity at the time. This production featured a combination of many different talents. The singers and the chorus which carry you away, the design, the staging all add a great deal to the story. A rare privilege to be able to see this under such conditions.

Un spectacle extraordinaire grâce à la mise en scène, aux couleurs, aux voix mais l'œuvre elle-même manque de génie tes et des reliefs. Belle musique cependant.

A superb piece of operatic theatre from every point of view. Magnificent staging with daring that completely transports the audience. For me, this was the discovery of an opera which is worthy of comparison with the finest Italian opera and yet preserves a very characteristic French touch very close to that of the great Offenbach.

le Diable

Laurent Pelly's production provides a rare opportunity to see this classic of French grand opera by Meyerbeer. Romance and the supernatural combine in a staging inspired by medieval France.

A grand opera that dominated the stages of Europe for most of the 19th century, Robert le diable is a masterpiece. Director Laurent Pelly breathes new life into Giacomo Meyerbeer’s great spectacle and audaciously entertaining moral fable, in this colourful new staging for The Royal Opera. The wonderful score includes brilliant arias, dramatic ensembles, rousing choruses and a ballet of ghostly nuns, and with the wavering hero of the title sung by Bryan Hymel, acclaimed for his role as Énée in Les Troyens for The Royal Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, this is an unmissable experience.

He is an excellent review which gives a very balanced and enlightened view of a production that has drawn some criticism

OperaDou says:

As usual, we had several British  people and several French people on our Jury (plus a Dutch lady and an Australian). The French members were almost all totally enamoured with this French opera, making almost no negative comments at all (this is very untypical !). However, although they made very positive comments, the Anglo-Saxons were rather more critical, several of them complaining about the length of the piece and the complexity of the plot.
