As usual, in addition to the Jury ratings we also conducted a survey into whether Jury members want to see this production again, would buy or recommend the disc and how they feel it compares with “being there”.
Here are the main findings for “Eugene Onegin from the Nederlandse Opera.
"Would you like to see this production again, on TV or in the cinema?"
92 % answered "Significantly better, rather better or comparable”.
This Nederlandse Opera production of Tchaikovsky’s materpiece—staged with references to the Soviet era — may surprise some audiences. However, Mariss Jansens and Stefan Herheim unquestionably bring out the full latent potential of Eugene Onegin here, without restraint, but also without over-emphasis. Regardless of whether the concept makes rational sense or appeals to personal taste, this is a passionate and moving account of the work on a musical and a dramatic level. The singing is also exceptionally good. You might like a younger person singing Tatyana, but a younger singer couldn’t sing this role half as well. It needs a mature voice, and Krassimira Stoyanova‘s is wonderfully toned, controlled with impeccable technique and emotionally expressive.

Overall impressions were very good. Several Jury members found the first Act over long, and the production rather confusing at the beginning, although the stunning costumes and creative staging were much appreciated. Everyone greatly admired the singing and the wonderful playing of the orchestra. The excellent acting was also singled out for a special mention.
What the Jury liked (quotes):
J’ai aimé la mise en scène et le coté historique de la Russie.
Liked the second half much more than the first because of the heightened drama — but there were also some good ensemble scenes in Act 1.
The costumes were very luxurious and I found the music extremely impressive. Loved it! Singing was also outstanding, especially Tatiana? Lenski and the Prince...
Musique magnifique — chanteurs magnifiques.
Really liked the set with its moving doors and use of reflections. The crowd scenes with the full chorus were also very impressive — especially with such fabulous image and sound quality.
I found the set and staging to be particularly creative, allowing all the action to flow very smoothly.
The amazing staging more than made up for a rather ponderous and confusing start... And overall the quality of the acting was really excellent —especially Tatiana (even if she was rather too “mature” for the part…)
What the Jury liked less (quotes):
I found the first act rather long.
L’ours et les cosmonauts… vraiment nécessaire?
A little uneasy about Onegin’s performance and I found the modern icons in the second half somewhat distracting.
We had to wait a long time before we heard Eugene Onegin sing anything!
